Appearance
There are 4 primary species of cockroaches that infest the homes in the United States:
American Cockroaches
Reddish brown, with a yellowish figure 8 pattern on the back of the head, the American cockroach is the largest of the infesting cockroaches. The American cockroach, despite its name is actually from Africa and probably brought by ships in the 1600’s.
Brown-banded Cockroaches
Brown-banded cockroaches are named from the two lighter bands they have across their dark brown bodies. The brown-banded roaches live about 200 days.
German Cockroaches
Light brown to tan, with two dark, almost parallel stripes located on their backs, German cockroaches are the most common species of the cockroaches. The German roach usually produces about 6 generations of offspring each year.
Oriental Cockroaches
Shiny black, Oriental cockroaches are also thought to have originated from Northern Africa. These roaches are most commonly referred to as “waterbugs” because they come out of the drains under our homes. They are also noticed for their unpleasant, “roachy” odor.
Behavior, Diets & Habits:
Different cockroaches behave differently.
American Cockroaches
These pests usually enter structures through drains and pipes and are most active at night and when temperatures are above 70 degrees. They can be found in homes basements, yards and alleys but are most commonly found in grocery stores and other commercial structures.
Brown-banded Cockroaches
These pests prefer a drier location with temperatures above 80 degrees. They are many times found under furniture and sometimes up higher off the floor such as in cabinets.
German Cockroaches
Most commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms, the German cockroach many times feeds on anything including soap, glue and toothpaste. They prefer warm, humid places close to food and moisture.
Oriental Cockroaches
The Oriental roach feeds on all kinds of food, especially decaying organic matter and starchy foods. They can survive outside for long periods under freezing weather and many times find harborage in basements and crawlspaces.

Cockroaches have been reported to spread at least 33 kinds of bacteria, six kinds of parasitic worms and at least seven other kinds of human pathogens.
