Fleas – Facts, Identification, Removal & Control
Fleas are small flat parasites, dark reddish-brown in color and have 6 legs. They are about 1/12 to1/6 inch long.
- Fleas transport themselves on rodents and other mammals. They infest household pests and wild animals. Fleas use their powerful legs to jump as high as 8 inches vertically and 14 inches horizontally.
- Adult fleas lay all their eggs on the pest.
- After hatching, flea eggs develop into larvae. Larvae remain hidden in the carpet and furniture fabrics, they then feed on the adult flea feces (dried blood) which accumulates, along with the eggs, in pet resting and activity areas.
- Before becoming adult fleas, the larvae transform into pupae within a silk-like cocoon. Pupae remain inside for 2-4 weeks, sometimes longer. The cocoon is resistant to pesticides and that is why fleas may be seen for an extended period.
Treatment of Premises
If you neglect to treat the pet’s environment (the premises) you will miss more than 90% of the developing flea population – the eggs, larvae and pupae. If the pet spends time indoors and outdoors, both areas need to be treated.
To prevent flea populations from building up, regularly vacuum and launder areas where your pet rests. If you have a major flea problem, treat your pet and follow these steps:
Treatment of Pets
It is important that the pet be treated in conjunction with the premises, preferably on the same day. Adult fleas spend almost their entirety on the pet, not in the carpet. Untreated pets will be continually bothered.
Several very effective and safe products for flea control on the pet are available. You must supplement pet treatments with regular cleaning of your home and periodic combing with a pet flea comb to detect new infestations.
Treatment of Yards
Most flea problems can be solved by treating the pet and the interior of the home. In cases where the pet spends a considerable amount outdoors, it may also be necessary to treat portions of the yard, mostly where the pet rests or is active.
Outdoor treatments are occasionally needed. If your pet regularly sleeps outside and flea numbers are high, these areas can be treated with a spray containing pyriproxyfen. If possible, open sleeping areas to sunlight by removing low hanging vegetation. Immature fleas are unlikely to survive in areas with exposure to sunlight.
Some wild animals can lead to outdoor flea problems as well, including feral cats, opossums, squirrels, and coyotes, so limit food, water, and shelter for these animals on your property.
